In celebration of the semiquincentennial, Shirley Robinson visits with a presentation on quiltmaking in the American colonies, and in the early years of our American republic.
March is National Quilting Month, and 2026 also marks the 250th anniversary of our nation—making it an ideal time for a program that celebrates both quilting and American history. Quiltmaking is deeply intertwined with the country’s cultural and industrial development: early textile production was essential to life in the colonies and to the art of quilting in the new nation.
Shirley will illustrate the presentation with multiple quilts, both antique and reproduction. The program will conclude with the debut of an important piece: an antique quilt that took first prize at the inaugural fair of the Farmers and Mechanics Association of the Town of Lenox in 1858. This quilt was recently donated to the Canastota Canal Town Museum by descendants of the original maker.
