Come and learn about paleontology, the study of fossils and ancient life. We'll cover what it means to be a paleontologist, a bit about some of the fossils you might find here in central New York, and what their remains can tell you about ancient environments hundreds of millions of years ago. See some examples of our local fossils (and a few non-local but still neat examples) and learn a bit about how to start identifying anything you might find yourself in future fossil hunting!
About the Presenter
Dr. Kristopher Kusnerik is a paleontologist with research interests in invertebrate paleontology and conservation paleobiology. He combines modern, historic, and prehistoric (i.e. fossil) records to reconstruct the history of long-term faunal changes for threatened ecosystems or species. Recent research interests use fossil and modern mollusks from Florida?s freshwater springs and rivers to understand the historical and ecological context of human, climate, and environmental-related changes to faunal communities. He received his doctorate in geology with a minor in wildlife ecology and conservation from the University of Florida.

Learn about the Battle of Oriskany, the western door of the Saratoga Campaign.
The Battle of Oriskany was fought on August 6, 1777 on the military road between the Oneida village of Oriska and Fort Stanwix (Schuyler) near present-day Rome, New York. American Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer led a volunteer force of 800 militia, joined by over 60 Oneida warriors, to relieve the fort, which was under siege by British-allied forces, composed of British soldiers, Jägers, local Loyalists and their Mohawk and Seneca allies. This unique battle of largely volunteer forces would later be billed as the ?bloodiest battle of the Revolution.?
The program will be presented by Alexis W. Albright, historian for Oneida County and the Village of Oriskany. Albright has served as curator of the Oriskany Museum since 2018. She holds degrees in Liberal Arts and History from Mohawk Valley Community College and Clarkson University, respectively, specializing in genealogy and nineteenth century American history. Prior to returning home to Oriskany, she served as editor for the Tennessee Valley Genealogical Society in Huntsville, AL.

Join local author Francis DiClemente as he discusses his memoir Stunted: A Memoir of Delayed Manhood.
Stunted: A Memoir of Delayed Manhood is a coming-of-age memoir spanning the 1980s and 1990s follows Francis DiClemente's experience of adolescence and early adulthood in a body that struggled to develop. Diagnosed with a rare brain tumor that led to hypopituitarism, DiClemente remained physically underdeveloped while his peers matured into young adults. As he navigated relationships and sexuality in college, it became evident that his prolonged experience with physical nonconformity fueled isolation, self-doubt, and shame.
This book explores the effects of his condition on schooling, intimacy, and emerging adulthood, examining how physical differences shape identity formation. It reframes masculinity not as a function of physical development but as an ethical and emotional practice grounded in empathy, resilience, and responsibility. Contributing to conversations on embodiment and self-acceptance, the work offers insight into the experience of living at odds with timelines of growth and belonging.
Francis DiClemente, a native of Rome, New York, is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker who lives in Syracuse. He is the author of numerous poetry collections and the memoir, Stunted: A Memoir of Delayed Manhood (Toplight Books, an imprint of McFarland & Company, 2026). His blog can be found at francisdiclemente.com.
